Here are three of my favorite wildlife photographs, all taken just a short walk from home. They remind me that moments of wonder are often closer than we think, if we take the time to notice them. As allinaword evolves, photos and short videos will become part of the journey alongside the writing—because not every story begins with words.
Waiting at Dusk – Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Herons are regular visitors to Lake Harriet from spring through fall. This one stood tall and unhurried beneath the soft glow of a lakeside lamp. The light was enough—I didn’t even need a flash on my iPhone.
A Brief Pause on a Long Journey – Horned Grebe

Each spring, Lake Harriet becomes a resting place for Horned Grebes. After wintering along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and the Great Lakes, they pause here before continuing north to breed. I was glad to catch one during its brief stopover.
A Moment of Stillness in Constant Motion – Hummingbird

At the Lake Harriet Rose Garden, I discovered a bed of flowers that hummingbirds returned to again and again. Darting from bloom to bloom, they seemed indifferent to the people admiring the garden. Then, for just a second, one paused—long enough for me to click the shutter.
More moments through my lens to come.
